With $7,000 and a firm handshake, they started Bank of Sullivan. In the absence of today's regulations, they built their business on their word and mutual trust. As the bank grew, they realized that hard work and trust were the foundations of their success. The Shaffer brothers even provided loans to a young, trustworthy animal trader, who had come to Sullivan via horse and buggy with his parents. That young boy was inspired by the Shaffer brothers and their liberal contributions in helping the city meet its needs. This young man was John W. Waller, who grew up to become President of Bank of Sullivan and laid the groundwork for what it would become today. As the bank grew, he was determined for it to stay true to its roots, that were deeply established in the symbiotic betterment of all the communities that it touched. Today, Sullivan Bank (renamed in 2020) continues to grow across the state, honoring the legacy and philosophies of its founders. We focus not just on conducting business but on fostering relationships that create legacies for generations.
